FILE - A worker returns voting machines to storage at the Fulton County Election preparation Center on Nov. 4, 2020 in Atlanta, Ga. The list of security breaches at local election offices since the 2020 election keeps growing, with investigations ongoing in at least three states, Colorado, Georgia and Michigan. Security experts say the breaches by themselves have not necessarily increased threats to the November elections, but say they increase the possibility that rogue election workers could access election equipment to launch attacks.

ATLANTA (AP) — Sensitive voting system passwords posted online. Copies of confidential voting software available for download. Ballot-counting machines inspected by people not supposed to have access.

The list of suspected security breaches at local election offices since the 2020 election keeps growing, with investigations underway in at least three states -- Colorado, Georgia and Michigan. The stakes appeared to rise this week when the existence of a federal probe came to light involving a prominent loyalist to former President Donald Trump who has been promoting voting machine conspiracy theories across the country.

When Queen Elizabeth II’s grandfather King George V died in 1936 life in Britain is unrecognizable to people today. But despite almost a century of change the images from the queen’s lying in state this week are almost exact copies of those from George V’s time. Historians say maintaining such traditions consistently through time plays into an enduring craving for ritual. It is also crucial to preserving reverence for the monarchy. Five British kings and queens have lain in state at Westminster Hall before the queen. The hall is a 900-year-old building at the center of British politics and power. Edward VII was the monarch who set the modern tradition of lying in state in Westminster Hall in 1910.

There are still bodies on the battlefield, lying where they fell on farm fields or inside burned-out tanks as Ukrainian troops swept through a Russian-occupied border area in a major counteroffensive this month. Ukrainian troops are now recovering the bodies of soldiers from both sides as well as civilians killed in the fighting north of Ukraine's second largest city, Kharkiv. The Ukrainian teams scouring the countryside for the fallen have to be careful because Russian troops continue to fire artillery into the area from inside Russia.

A powerful typhoon approaching southern Japan is pounding the region with strong winds and heavy rain. Thousands of people are evacuating and the storm is causing blackouts and paralyzing ground and air transportation Sunday. Japan Meteorological Agency said Typhoon Nanmadol was near the southern island of Yakushima, packing maximum surface winds of 101 miles per hour. The storm is slowly headed to the country’s main southern island of Kyushu and could make landfall there later Sunday. Nanmadol is forecast to turn east and reach Tokyo on Tuesday. Local authorities so far reported no major damage or injuries.

CLEVELAND – The Minnesota Twins lost both games of a doubleheader to the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday, all but ending their chase for an AL Central championship. But if they succumbed meekly in the first game, a 5-1 defeat, they did everything they possibly could to stave off the sweep in t…

No. 5 Clemson came alive with three third-quarter touchdowns on the way to its ninth straight victory, a 48-20 win over Louisiana Tech. Will Shipley ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns to help Clemson to its 36h home win in a row, a streak that dates back to November 2016. The Tigers led just 13-6 at halftime and turned things around helped by two interceptions thrown by La Tech's Parker McNeil and a fourth-down stop deep in Bulldogs territory. All three led to touchdowns as Clemson pulled away.

Bijan Robinson ran for 183 yards and three touchdowns, Jahdae Barron returned an interception 44 yards for a score in the third quarter and No. 21 Texas beat UTSA 41-20. Texas trailed 17-7 in the second quarter then rallied to tie it by halftime. Robinson’s 78-yard touchdown run gave Texas the lead, and Barron’s interception return put the Longhorns up by 11 to snuff the Roadrunners’ bid for an upset that would have been the biggest win in the history of a rising program that has only been playing football since 2011. Hudson Card got the start at quarterback for Texas (2-1) in place of the injured Quinn Ewers and finished with 161 yards passing and even scampered for a 32-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Michael Penix Jr. threw for 397 yards and four touchdowns and Washington emphatically stated its case as a contender in the Pac-12 with a 39-28 win over No. 11 Michigan State. Penix was spectacular for three quarters in a primetime national showcase that showed Kalen DeBoer’s rebuild is progressing faster than expected. Washington led 29-8 at halftime. Penix completed 24 of 40 passes. Payton Thorne threw for 323 yards and three TDs, and led a pair of quick fourth-quarter scoring drives for Michigan State that caused some nerves for the Huskies. But the rally was too late for the Spartans.

VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) — For 116 years, St. Mary Catholic Church has been a source of spiritual guidance and education for African American Catholics in Vicksburg and Warren County.

Taulia Tagovailoa threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Corey Dyches with 7:30 remaining, and Maryland held on for a 34-27 victory over SMU. Roman Hemby ran for 151 yards and a touchdown for the Terrapins, who overcame 15 penalties to win this matchup of flawed-but-unbeaten teams. The Mustangs had three of the game’s five turnovers, and they lost the ball on downs at the Maryland 9 when Tanner Mordecai’s fourth-down pass to the end zone sailed high with 2:31 remaining. SMU got the ball back one more time but turned it over on downs again near midfield with 46 seconds left.

Being a good, but definitely not great, quarterback can be a rough ride in college football, especially when fans see only a ceiling they wish was higher. This is the life that Penn State’s Sean Clifford and Oregon’s Bo Nix have led. On Saturday, the veteran quarterbacks proved their worth. Meanwhile, now that Nebraska has moved on from Scott Frost, the question is who’s the next coach to be fired.
