The packaging aims to improve environmental protection across the supply chain.

UK-based sustainable packaging provider DS Smith has developed a corrugated cardboard box for e-commerce shipments of medical devices.

DS Smith created the sustainable packaging for an undisclosed company that serves the Asian market.

The corrugated cardboard box features a single-material solution instead of glued packaging with a single-use plastic insert, which the company had previously used.

The packaging can be used for e-commerce deliveries, with different parts of the device being stored using cardboard inserts. It is also claimed to reduce costs.

In addition, the packaging is designed to improve environmental protection across the supply chain and be easily recyclable.

In a statement, DS Smith said: “It is a simpler form of packaging compared to the original but gave excellent protection to the device and its several separate parts.

“This was particularly important because the device was being sold online, so the packaging had to be able to withstand the challenges of being delivered by post.”

In a separate development, DS Smith has opened a Fibre and Paper Development Laboratory at its flagship Kemsley Paper Mill in Kent, UK.

The company will use the £750,000 ($984,825) laboratory to carry out research on technologies to improve the performance and sustainability qualities of fibre-based packaging.

It is part of the company’s £100m research and development (R&D) programme, which was announced last May.

DS Smith Material Development director Nick Thompson said: “At DS Smith, we are constantly developing innovative new thinking to help our customers with this challenge and the new Fibre and Paper Development Laboratory allows us to optimise the performance and circularity of our customers’ packaging.”

The laboratory opening comes after DS Smith opened its first hybrid Customer Innovation Hub in Lisbon, Portugal, in October last year.
