Charlotte, N.C. — The state's newest high school is also home to one of its most unique mascot names.
The Palisades Pumas are debuting this fall as the newest high school in Charlotte, located in the southwesternmost corner of the county. The South Carolina border stands less than four miles to the south and also less than two miles to its west (Lake Wylie marks the state line on this side).
Although Palisades is the only high school in the state with the Pumas moniker, it could've had another cookie-cutter mascot name. According to the school's Facebook page, the others finalists community members could vote for were Hornets and Pirates.
The school colors are unique as well — teal and purple. Only Cox Mill in Concord comes close to matching the Charlotte Hornets-inspired combination.
Palisades, which will draw most of its student body from what was Olympic High School's district, will open its doors with only grades 9-11 but will field varsity football -- and the school's Facebook shows a picture of the newly-turfed field.
Palisades joins the So. Meck 4A Conference with South Mecklenburg, Olympic, Harding, Berry Academy, and Myers Park.
The school won't be the new kid on the block for long -- in the fall of 2024, a yet-to-be-named high school should open about six miles north of where Ardrey Kell now stands to relieve overcrowding at both Ardrey Kell and South Mecklenburg, among others.
