The company will invest nearly €65m in advanced machinery at three of its European plants.

Multinational paper and packaging firm Mondi has announced an investment of almost €65m ($66.2m) to expand its capacity to meet growing demand for sustainable pet food packaging solutions.

The company is investing in its consumer flexible packaging plants in Korneuburg, Austria, and Halle and Steinfeld, Germany.

At its Korneuburg facility, Mondi is investing in advanced machinery and equipment, as well as expanding the facility’s production area.

The investment will increase the plant’s capacity with the aim of strengthening its position in pre-made retort stand-up pouches for the wet pet food segment.

Mondi is investing in advanced machinery at its facilities in Halle and Steinfeld to increase their production capacities for sustainable pre-made bag solutions for pet food, home and personal care products.

This upgrade will enable customers to replace multi-layer, non-recyclable packaging with sustainable alternatives, including mono-material recyclable stand-up pouches and paper-based pre-made bags.

Mondi consumer flexibles COO Dirk Gabriel said: “We take pride in being an innovative, agile partner for our customers.

“With this investment, we continue to take the lead in packaging solutions that are sustainable by design, especially in the pet food industry.

“This investment also supports our Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030) sustainability framework which is focused on circular driven solutions, created by empowered people, taking action on climate.

“With these projects, we’re increasing operational efficiency and reducing our own energy consumption while also connecting our production network.”

The investment is part of Mondi’s €1bn expansionary capital investment programme to expedite its growth in sustainable packaging.

Earlier this year, the company announced a €280m investment to boost its corrugated packaging production across four countries.

Of the total investment, around €185m will be invested in Mondi’s corrugated plants in central and eastern Europe, while the firm has allocated the remaining €95m to its containerboard mill in Świecie, Poland.
